IFA CHAIRMAN REVIEWS THE YEAR – from John Green
Welcome to the Winter 05 edition of our newsletter, to update IFA members and others on activities in the franchise sector in Ireland. Franchise Ireland is also published to raise the profile of business format franchising, particularly as a means of starting or expanding a business.
The franchise sector in Ireland has experienced unprecedented interest and growth in 2005 and I am pleased to review the highlights (see www.irishfranchiseassociation.com for more information or to join our free mailing list):
- The Irish Franchise Association has shown a 20%+ increase in membership, including new franchisors and franchise consultants and we are presently reviewing a three year strategic plan including membership ethics
- There has been sustained growth of at least 12% with 240 systems in operation here now, 2,300 franchisees/outlets and 20,000+ employed directly. We made a submission to Government on the potential of the franchise sector for the economy, and asking for appropriate recognition and support
- Increased interest in franchising as a means of starting or expanding a business is evidenced by the attendances at our six regional seminars/franchisees-wanted road shows and presentations to third-level colleges, Enterprise Boards and business organisations. Our website is enjoying record numbers of hits and the IFA attracted good publicity in the media
- Our seminars, "How to Franchise Your Business – An Introduction" attracted many business owners who are interested in looking at the business-format franchise model as a means of expansion
- The Irish Franchise Exhibition, held at the RDS, Dublin in November, was very well supported by a record number of exhibitors and visitors. Potential entrepreneurs are recognising the better success rate of starting a franchised business compared to starting on their own – "franchising means being in business for yourself but not by yourself"
- The standard and number of entries for the Irish Franchise Awards exceeded our expectations and some 230 guests attended the Awards Presentation Dinner at the Hilton Dublin Hotel. (See following section for details of the winners)
To IFA members - thank you for your continued support. To other franchisors – why not have a look at the benefits of IFA membership in 2006?
To all of our readers – have a very happy Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year.
JOHN GREEN, Chairman
Irish Franchise Association

Service Franchise of the Year 2005, Action International, the world's largest business coaching company, was launched in Ireland by former banker Paul Fagan in 2002. Fagan identified a gap in the business services market when he recognised the two main reasons that many businesses fail are cash flow challenges and a lack of skills and knowledge. Action International business coaches work with business owners on mastering cash flow, building profits, introducing systems to ensure growth and sustainability, a service that is not provided by traditional business advisors, management consultants or accountants.
(Left – Paul Fagan accepts the Award from Brody Sweeney) Fagan believes an Action International franchise is the perfect business opportunity for individuals who are interested in providing business coaching to the SME sector. Action International has a significant advantage over other business coaching companies in Ireland, with a global network of over 700 business coaches operating in 19 Countries. Currently, there is a team of 20 business coaches, supported by a head office team based in Howth.
